Dr. K (Kathryn) is a professional dog trainer, educator and evolutionary biologist. She developed The Dog’s Perspective training approach that combines extensive dog training expertise, biology teaching experience and dog evolutionary biology. We train from the dog’s point of view, which makes the most sense to dogs.
Passion for Animals
Dr. K was born with a passion for animals, especially dogs. As young child, she made the animal-meat connection while visiting a Wisconsin dairy farm and has been a devoted vegetarian since her teens. Her academic pursuits began in zoology and finished with a Masters and Doctorate in evolutionary biology. These academic achievements would not have been possible without the unconditional love, protection and support of her beloved doggy companions.
Dog Training Beginnings
Dr. K’s dog training journey took off after landing her dream job at Brookfield Children’s Zoo near Chicago. Daily activities included training and caring for dogs, Psittacine birds and birds of prey. Care of farm animals included daily hand milking of cows and goats. The highlight of each day was live demonstrations of different dog training disciplines. We demonstrated dog obedience, scent tracking, land retrieving, service work and agility skills. The grand finale of each dog show was a sheepherding demo with a border collie.

Dog training at the Children’s Zoo turned a child’s passion into a lifelong pursuit. Dr. K trained and titled dogs in obedience and tracking. She also trained in retrieving, dock diving, service work and sheepherding. Dr. K was fortunate to work with top dog training mentors across Illinois, Georgia, and North Carolina, including elite obedience trainer Nancy Patton of Atlanta’s Dogwood Obedience Group.
Teaching Students
During and after graduate school, Dr. K taught biology courses at numerous colleges and universities. Her academic teaching experience provided the insight that teaching from the student’s point of view is the best approach. In dog training, dogs are the students, so the best dog training approach is from the dog’s point of view.
Dog Training Method
The Dog’s Perspective combines real world dog training and teaching experiences with a deep understanding of canine evolution. We work with puppies, adult family dogs, therapy dogs and service dogs. We specialize in puppy and dog socialization, dog obedience, dog anxiety, separation anxiety, leash reactivity and other behavior or training challenges. Our residential board and train programs accelerate training progress and encourage dogs to relax, reset and thrive in life.
